Pipe Bursting

The technique of pipe bursting is used to totally replace damaged sewer lines. In this process an opening is created at both ends of the damaged sewer line. Once these openings have been established, a large cable is pushed through from one end to the other, and then a spear-shaped “bursting head” tool is attached to the end of the cable. Finally, a new length of piping is attached behind the bursting head. The bursting head is then pulled through the pipe, and it “bursts” the pipe as it gets pulled through the entire length. In this process the existing damaged pipe is just relined with a seamless infused liner that seals all the holes and cracks along the damaged area of pipe. Prior to the new liner being installed, the old damaged pipe is flushed out through a process called “hydro-jetting”. Hydro-jetting eliminates all loose debris from inside the damaged pipe, preparing it for a smooth installation of the cured-in-place pipe. The liner is then sealed in place by employing hot and high-pressured steam that is forced through the liner using a type of bladder. The cured-in-place pipe technique is not effective in pipes that are unstable or extremely weakened.


Moling is a trenchless techniques that is used to lay down new sections of pipe. Moling uses a special pneumatically-driven machine that forces the pipe through the soil along the path of the sewer line.

Pull-in-Place Lining

The pull-in-place lining technique employs a resin and fiberglass liner to line an existing damaged pipe. This technique requires that two small holes are dug originally, one at the start of the section in need of repair or replacement and the other at the end. The liner is then pulled through the damaged pipe using a winch, and then is cured with steam or heat, or left to cure itself if the ambient ground temperature is high enough.

Inversion Lining

Inversion lining is employed to seal pipes that are in generally good condition, but with a few cracks or gaps. In this technique a hole is dug close by the area where the liner will be installed. Liners are usually made from resin and a felt tube. The liner is then “inverted” using air pressure, and expands to fill the damaged area of pipe.
